“In Thailand, plastic resin production has increased by 3.4% annually in the past 4-5 years, compared to the country’s GDP that has not been higher than 2%. At the same time, there has been an increase in domestic plastic manufacturing. These indicate that plastic is still essential in everyday life, depending on which segment is in demand of the market,” Mr. Veera Kwanloetchit, President of Plastics Institute of Thailand talked about the direction of plastics with Reed Tradex team.
Plastics Industry in Position to Serve New Market Demands
Although the single-use plastic ban at the beginning of this year has had a considerable impact on the plastics industry, during COVID-19 pandemic, plastics have made a comeback and taken center stage for business and life continuity. All of the packaging, cutleries, and bags have played a significant role in promoting hygiene, while medical devices, face masks, and face shields that are made from plastics have effectively assisted in slowing down the spread of the virus and keeping outdoor activities possible. Since people are becoming more aware of health and safety, Mr. Veera suggested that plastics manufacturers should focus on extending to these three product lines:
Social distancing products such as Plastic Partition.
Hygiene products such as Face Shield, Surgical Mask, N95 Mask, Modular Screening Unit & Equipment.
Products related to digital technologies such as AI and Electronic Devices.
"Plastics industry is still continuing to grow, but the challenge is that how it is able to manufacture products that respond to the market demand and situation. So, having a platform as a ‘One-Stop Solution’ to realize new business ideas will be beneficial to accelerate the growth of the industry."
Mr. Veera also emphasized that manufacturers should foster an adaptive mindset to prepare for uncertainties in the future, and gain a clear understanding of current market trends to thrive in the next normal era. They can start off by analyzing their existing capabilities and machinery, and consider whether it's possible to adjust their production to respond to high-demand segments.
“Collaboration is key to survive in this era. Apart from consulting with us, joining the exhibition, where all industrialists will be gathering, will enable you to discuss, exchange innovations, and make your ideas come true. InterPlas Thailand is a ‘One-Stop Solution’ where you can adjust your production and expand your market more effectively,” Mr. Veera added.
